[Columbus]: Laura Lanese, president of the Inter-University Council of Ohio (IUC), issued the following statement today regarding Governor Mike DeWine’s 2024 State of the State Address:
“Ohio’s Public Universities continue to praise Governor DeWine’s support for public higher education in the state of Ohio.
We have worked with and supported Governor DeWine’s vision for higher education for the state of Ohio since his tenure began in 2019 and appreciate his reassurance for higher education funding, especially with the Ohio College Opportunity Grant, Choose Ohio First Program, Great Minds Fellowship, and the Governor’s Merit Scholarship Program.
Governor DeWine continued to clearly state his support for Ohio’s Tuition Guarantee Program, which ensures tuition predictability and stability for our students. I am proud to say all 14 of Ohio’s public universities are currently participating in this program and will continue to do so. The IUC supports Governor DeWine’s initiative to ensure a high-quality, high-value higher education. Even more significant is Governor DeWine’s theme of investing in a variety of state services and structures to support its most underserved citizens. It is a message of hope that Ohio’s public universities embrace. Tens of the thousands of students from low-income families send their children and grandchildren to public universities in Ohio to pursue the American dream.
Additionally, our public universities are working towards alignment to the Science of Reading. We are committed to making sure current and future teachers have the necessary tools to ensure high-quality reading curriculum to prepare tomorrow’s future.
Ohio’s public universities support the variety of educational pathways and options currently available to students across Ohio. Public universities will also work with the Ohio Department of Higher Education to gather graduate employment data as referenced by Governor DeWine. IUC’s member institutions have particularly close ties to their local business community, addressing the changing needs of local employers. Our regional campus system is also providing place-bound students with opportunities to pursue education and training for new or changing careers.”
